The work consists of a series of letters, dated 1823-1824, which give an overview of the insurrection as well as a description of contemporary life and the places the author visited. Among others, Waddington gives information on the Philike Etaireia, the massacre of Chios in 1822, events in Athens during 1821-1824 and the siege of the Acropolis, Catholicism in Syros, Naxos and Tinos, the Greek navy and the condition of countless Greek refugees. .
